Easy to use, useless for Mac owners by Just A User
I read David Pogue’s review in the NYT and went and bought this camcorder. On the plus side, it is incredibly easy to use, and a lot of fun to record. On the seriously negative side, standard video editing software like iMovie or Adobe cannot make use of the avi files produced because of some incompatibility in codecs used. You cannot do anything with this in terms of making a compilation and sticking it on a DVD etc. So you have a bunch of avi clips lying around. Until this situation improves, it is being used as a paperweight. Pure Digital might do well to think about living in the digital age where people might want to actually use the clips in some interesting way.

Love It! by Cynthia Jaynes
We bought this for our 11 year old son and we all think it’s great. Easy to use, easy to upload and a long battery life. He can make videos with his friends, and now I don’t have to worry about documenting our travels - he does it for us.

Mac users beware! by George L. Turin
This is a neat little gadget, pocket-sized and extremely simple to use. While the video resolution is not what one can get in higher-priced and bulkier camcorders, it is adequate for family movies.

There is one serious caveat for Mac users though, which is not apparent until looking at the AVI-format video clips within the Flip software that comes with the camera. PC users can splice selected clips into a movie within this software, view the movie, and then save it to a “Movie Mixes” folder on their computer hard drive. Mac users can only splice clips and view the resulting movie, BUT NOT SAVE IT. In order to make saveable movies from the clips, one must first save the AVI clips to a folder in “My Flip Video Library,” open each in QuickTime Pro, and to export it to another folder in MPEG4 format. (Don’t forget to use the LAN/Intranet option for the transfer bandwith rather than the default setting, so as to avoid degradation of quality.) Then one must import the MPEG4 clips into iMovie to make movies from them. VERY time-consuming.

It would be SO much easier if, as on a PC, at least one could save movies in the AVI format to the Flip “Movie Mixes” folder. That might be as far as one wanted to go — the movie would be available for viewing at will. One would only need to translate the movies into MPEG4 format if one wanted, say, to burn a DVD in iDVD (which doesn’t like AVI). I’m not a computer expert, but I can’t see why the Flip people can’t make this option available.
