Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Product Description:
Many noise-reducing headphones feature large, over-the-head or behind-the- neck headbands, making them rather bulky to use while traveling or working out. Not so the Sony MDR-EX71SLA Fontopia headphones, whose ultra-light, in-the-ear design sounds great while minimizing distracting ambient noise. The closed-type construction makes the headphones a perfect fit for airline, train, or bus travel, or while dancing or skating to your own tunes. The phones owe their audio performance to the extra- small 9 mm drivers and neodymium magnets fitted inside each earpiece. The drives and magnets combine to generate high-intensity sound, with a deeper-than-expected bass response (as low as 6 Hz) and refreshingly crisp mid- and high-range tones (all the way up to 23 kHz). Listeners will also dig the three sizes of earbuds that come with the headphones, ensuring that users find the right match for their individual ear shapes while enjoying long-lasting comfort. And thanks to the dual cord lengths–1.65 feet (original) and a 2.3-foot extension–the phones are great for both iPods and MP3 players on armbands or belt clips.

Other details include an oxygen-free copper cord that reduces noise and improves signal transfer, a gold-plated mini-plug that resists corrosion, a stylish neck chain cord, and a streamlined carrying case that slips easily into a shirt pocket. The 100 mW phones, whose black color matches many MP3 players, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

Great Earphones up to the point it starts falling apart by R. Yosofov
I’ve had 2 pairs of these headphones! The first one lasted 9 months before it collapsed. The second one lasted 4 months before the right side stopped working. Also the right earphone is much longer than the left earphone, so sometimes its not comfortable.

In my opinion, there are better earphones for the same price. Now Im searching a different set. Hope to have more luck with my new set.

keep the cat away and the product will play by SAGA
Good Sound, great fit (3 sizes), comfortable, works will in iPod, MP3 and so on. Buy it. (case is cheezy and not really usable)

Amazon shipped the wrong product by Lior Paster
Disappointed. I ordered with 2-day delivery, the package came on time but inside was the wrong item: I received cheap sony headphones for seven bucks instead of the MDR-71. when I requested to have the correct item overnighted, the answer was that if I place the order today (Thursday 4 PM EST) it will not arrive until Monday! they claimed it was tool late for overnight (at 4 PM… give me a break), and they don’t deliver on Saturday. What a joke. That’s what you get when you buy online instead of a real store like CC which has unbelievable good service.

Great Sound, Terrible Design by RockGod
The sound quality produced by these buds is absolutely fantastic. I bought them to replace the buds that came with my MP3 player. Initially I found the highs to be a bit muddy compared to the buds I was using. But the bass was shockingly great. After using them for a couple of weeks and getting used to the sound, I didn’t notice the muddy highs so much.

They are very comfortable and they do a really good job of reducing ambient room noise. I was using them at work where there is a good deal of noise, and I could keep the volume at a very low (between 5 and 14 out of 40 on my iriver clix) level.

For sound quality I would give them a 5 star rating.

For design I would give them a 1 star rating. Here’s why:

Since the part that actually sits in the ear (they come with three different sizes) is made of rubber or a rubber-like material they don’t “breathe” well. That translates to moisture build-up which causes them to start sliding out of the ear. When this happens the lows are not as well heard. This is a minor annoyance.

Here’s the biggest reason for the low rating: the point at which the cord branches off and leads to the buds is very awkward and cumbersome because they made the brances uneven lengths. The cord for the left bud is about half the length of the right. This led me to snag the left side constantly. Now, because of this, the left side no longer works at all.

I’ve only had them for about six months.

Very bad idea Sony.

I will not buy these again.
